Darlington City Street and Sanitation Department - The city has informed us that Wednesday is designated as the day the street sweeper will be sweeping the streets in Pine Village. Please be on notice that this process will stir up a lot of dust, so it is suggested that Wednesday not be a day to hang laundry on the clothesline.

Summer is Here!

Tips to keep our kiddos and seniors safe!

  • Protect skin from the sun.
    • Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher whenever your child is going to be outdoors.
    • Reapply every three hours or immediately after your child has been in or splashed by water.
    • Try to avoid outdoor activities during peak sunshine hours and consider dressing children in sun-protective clothing.
  • Avoid bug bites.
    • As the weather warms up, bugs come out in full force.
    • To avoid bug bites, apply insect repellant before spending time outdoors, avoid using heavily scented soaps or lotions, and cover arms and legs as much as possible.
  • Enjoy fireworks safely.
    • More than 10,000 people are treated in emergency departments in the U.S. each year due to injury from fireworks, and of these, nearly a third are children under 15.
    • If you're celebrating the summer holidays with a bang, keep kids safe.
  • Drink enough water.
    • Kids are more prone to dehydration than adults, and their risk increases as temperatures rise.
    • The amount of water a child should drink varies by age, weight, and activity level.
    • However, a general rule is to take half of your child's weight (up to 100 pounds) - and that's the number of ounces of water they should drink every day.
  • Don't monkey around.
    • Playground-related injuries account for more than 200,000 ER visits each year.
    • Always supervise children on playgrounds and choose the right play equipment for your child's age and skills.
    • In the summer sun, it's also a good idea to carefully touch equipment to check for hot surfaces before playing on it.

Staying Safe When It's Too Darn Hot
When the temperature climbs above 80°F, older adults need to be proactive and take precautions to avoid ailments due to excessive heat. Keep in mind the following tips when trying to stay cool.

  • Stay away from direct sun exposure as much as possible. If possible, plan your outdoor activities either early in the morning or when the sun starts to set. Air conditioning is your friend in summer. Spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned spaces.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of cool water, clear juices, and other liquids that don't contain alcohol or caffeine. Alcohol and caffeine cause you to lose water in your body by making you urinate more.
  • Dress appropriately. Whenever you can, try wearing loose, light-colored clothes. Avoid dark-colored clothes as they may absorb heat. Top it off with a lightweight, broad-brimmed hat and you are dressed like a pro! These simple changes will help you both stay cool and avoid sunburn.
  • Apply sunscreen liberally to all exposed skin. Also, bugs are abundant in summer, so spray insect repellent when going outdoors.
  • Cool down! Take tepid (not too cold or too hot) showers, baths, or sponge baths when you're feeling warm.  Don't have the time?  Then wet washcloths or towels with cool water and put them on your wrists, ankles, armpits, and neck.

Recertification: Please complete your recertification packets by July 15th, if you have not already done so! If there is a problem and you have not completed your recertification, contact Elaine Bell as soon as possible.

Reminders:

  • No fireworks or displays are allowed on the Housing Authority of Darlington property at any time for any reason.
  • It is very warm - please pull your roll carts to the street so that trash will not accumulate and have an odor and bugs gathering.
  • The curfew is still in place.  Please do not risk getting a Lease Violation for violating the curfew.
  • Watch your kids and make sure they are not playing and/or sitting on the air conditioning condensers (boxes) on the grounds.

Using Caution Whenever Kids May Be Around and You Are Driving

  1. Be vigilant during times when children are most likely to be outside.
    • This is typically before and after school, and during the day on weekends, holidays, and summer vacation. Don't let your guard down just because it's dark outside, though. Any time you suspect that kids may be around assume that they are around and drive accordingly.
  2. Keep an eye out for children darting around residential neighborhoods.
    • Kids often play outside after school, on sunny days, and even in the snow. They may be riding bikes or running, which can make it hard for you to slow down in time to see them if you are going over the speed limit. The speed limit is often 25 mph in residential areas - stay at or below it.
  3. Turn the corners of your neighborhood slowly.
    • Since children often like to play in front of their homes, they can be prone to darting into the street without noticing your turning. Be extra wary if you notice children are playing ball games, as they may run into the road after a ball. Also be aware of ice cream trucks, since children often run towards these without paying attention to traffic.
  4. Back out of your driveway slowly.
    • Kids may be either walking or playing behind your vehicle. It can be hard to see small children from your rear-view mirror, which is why quickly looking in it before backing up is not enough of a precaution. Glancing behind your car before you get in can give you peace of mind that there are no children there.
  5. Be careful driving out of any driveway in forward gear too
